• West Coast Ocean Data Portal - The WCGA has supported the development of a regional data sharing initiative to increase the access and discoverability of ocean and coastal data for better decision making. You can visit the Portal here. 


  • Ocean Observing and Long-Term Monitoring—Collaborated with British Columbia to urge the United States and Canadian federal governments to continue to support ocean observing systems.
  • Seafloor Mapping—Collected and processed data and developed fact sheets to advance seafloor mapping of all state tidelands and submerged lands out to three miles.
  • Working Waterfronts and Sustainable Coastal CommunitiesSupported allocation of $70 million in federal disaster funding to compensate for closure of the West Coast commercial salmon fishery.
  • Regional Sediment Management—Sponsored a workshop to transfer knowledge and experiences among West Coast regional sediment management practitioners and increase the effectiveness of their collective efforts.

Initial Actions


When the West Coast Governors' Agreement on Ocean Health was signed in 2006, it directed staff of the three Governors to take certain immediate actions relative to offshore oil, nonpoint source pollution, regional research, and federal support. The following is the status on those four actions:

Offshore oil and gas leasingOffshore oil—Send a joint message to the President and Congress reinforcing our opposition to oil and gas leasing, exploration and development off our coasts.


ACTION: The Governors sent letters to the President and Congress on this important issue.

ACTION: The Governors sent a letter to the House and Senate Appropriations Subcommittees urging restoration of FY2008 funding for the coastal nonpoint pollution control program on June 6, 2007.

Federal Support
Governors sent a letter to the White House on this issue, and the federal administration identified three federal agency leads to assist the WCGA in April 2007.

ACTION: The Governors sent a letter to the White House Council on Environmental Quality April 10, 2007. Council Chair James Connaughton sent reply letters on April 17, 2007.
